In brief

The Southern Swing is an 8-hour rotating schedule that uses four crews to cover a 24/7 operation. Over a 28-day cycle each crew works seven day shifts, seven evening shifts and seven night shifts, with breaks of four days, one day and two days between them. Crews average 42 hours a week and get one weekend off in every four.

What Is the Southern Swing Schedule?

The Southern Swing is a classic 8-hour schedule for continuous operations. Three shifts run every day — days, evenings and nights — and four crews rotate through all three, so each crew works every shift in turn. It is the pattern many operations used before 12-hour schedules became common, and it is still a good fit where 8-hour shifts make more sense than 12.

How Does the Southern Swing Schedule Work?

Each crew works seven day shifts, four days off, seven evening shifts, one day off, seven night shifts, then two days off — 21 eight-hour shifts in 28 days. The rotation runs forward, from days to evenings to nights. The grid shows one crew’s four weeks.

The other three crews work the same pattern, each starting a week later, so three crews are on shift every day (one per shift) while the fourth is off.

When Does the Southern Swing Schedule Fit?

The Southern Swing tends to fit 24/7 operations that need or prefer 8-hour shifts and want evening and night work shared evenly. It is a weaker fit where employees would trade longer shifts for more days off — about three in four shift workers in our surveys would, for the same pay — or where a workforce strongly prefers fixed shifts.

Is This the Right Schedule for Your Operation?

A pattern is only the starting point. Which one fits depends on your coverage needs, your workforce’s preferences, your overtime and absence rates, and the policies that go with the schedule — and most sites end up with a variation tailored to them.
