Example 1:
Schedule Development and Implementation Advice
Situation:
A municipal law enforcement agency contacted us looking for a new shift schedule. Fifteen officers would be impacted and the staffing requirements were already established.
Solution:
The coverage requirements were predetermined by the department so no business analysis was needed. The Police Association’s active role and the small number of affected officers made consensus-building feasible without the assistance of Shiftwork Solutions. Shiftwork Solutions designed five schedules that met their staffing requirements and provided basic advice on selecting and implementing the new schedules.
Total project time: 2.5 hours.
Example 2:
Change and Implementation Management Assistance
Situation:
A label manufacturer needed to expand from a 5-day to a 7-day operation. With only 30 employees and one department, they were looking for a simple way to add a fourth crew that would be acceptable to their current and future employees.
Solution:
Shiftwork Solutions developed a survey for local management to administer. Shiftwork Solutions processed the survey and then created the following:
Local management distributed the implementation packages to their workforce and later picked up the schedule preference forms. Once the new schedule was selected, it was implemented on a predetermined date.
Total project time: 2.3 weeks
Example 3:
Change and Implementation Management Leadership
Situation:
A pharmaceutical company with 65 shift workers just received FDA approval for a new product. To meet this new demand, production capacity would need to expand beyond what the current 5-day schedule would allow. Retaining the high-skilled, high-tenured workforce was critical. The workforce’s extensive experience on the current 5-day schedule made new schedules unattractive in their eyes.
Solution:
Shiftwork Solutions performed a detailed business analysis. Data were collected at the site by the Shiftwork Solutions project manager and included electronic and hard copy historical information as well as interviews with appropriate personnel (department managers, finance managers, etc.)
Shiftwork Solutions processed the survey and then created and reviewed the following with local management:
- A detailed survey analysis report
- An implementation package
- A detailed report summarizing the business analysis of the company’s shift work practices. The report included recommendations along with a cost/benefit analysis.
Shiftwork Solutions met with the workforce to explain and distribute the implementation package. At the same time, an educational presentation was made to the workforce. The content of this presentation was designed to create an awareness of how to better adjust to the rigors of shift work, including family and physiological issues.
Total project time: 4 weeks.
Example 4:
Change and Implementation Management Leadership
Situation:
A vertically integrated manufacturing facility with multiple departments and 585 members of a union-represented workforce needed to expand their production capacity for some of their product lines without additional capital investment.
Solution:
Shiftwork Solutions performed a detailed business analysis. Data were collected at the site by the Shiftwork Solutions project manager and included electronic and hard copy historical information as well as interviews with appropriate personnel (department managers, finance managers, etc.) A shift committee was formed consisting of both management and union representatives. Shiftwork Solutions worked with the committee to ensure that the interests of all stakeholders were taken into account when designing the final solution. The existing contract would not support the schedules preferred by the workforce, so Shiftwork Solutions drafted a Letter of Agreement (LOA) that contained pay and work policies that would work with the new schedule. The shift committee helped to ‘fine-tune’ the LOA prior to it being sent to management and the rank-and-file for approval.
Shiftwork Solutions administered a shiftwork survey. As part of the survey, the shift workers were shown and allowed to rate several potential 7-day schedule options.
Shiftwork Solutions processed the survey and then created and reviewed the following with local management:
- A detailed survey analysis report
- An implementation package
- A detailed report summarizing the business analysis of the company’s shift work practices.
- A Letter of Agreement (subject to final approval before adding to the existing contract as an addendum.)
- The report included recommendations along with a cost/benefit analysis.
Shiftwork Solutions met with the workforce to explain and distribute the implementation package. At the same time, an educational presentation was made to the workforce. The content of this presentation was designed to create an awareness of how to better adjust to the rigors of shift work, including family and physiological issues.
Total project time: 10 weeks.
